Tehachapi Performing Arts

April 21st, 2008 Stan Beckham

Due to the fact that the City Council voted for a smaller Civic Center and City Hall complex to be built in a shopping strip mall at Valley Blvd and Curry, B.J. Mitchell, President of Tehachapi Performing Arts Center has made it abundantly clear to the City that their Civic Center will not be adequate for the TPAC’s needs. If the City Council had chosen the wiser path of building the larger facility that I advocated in the Capital Hills area, the Civic Center complex would have been amply adequate for the TPAC’s needs along with serving the Tehachapi Area as a multi-purpose facility. As Ms. Mitchell notes in her letter to me, “It seem logical that the City and TPAC could work together to make this larger vision a reality.” In my best business opinion, the shopping mall site is going to be a fiasco on a larger scale than the fire department. The City Council was short-sighted in their vision, and this shopping mall site is landlocked with no room to grow.

The City Council is determined to shove this shopping center site down the throats of the Citizens of Tehachapi without so much as a needs analysis from the public that TPAC undertook for their facility. With the elections coming up, Mayor Hand and Ed Grimes are going to get their way before they are voted out of office come hell or high-water and the Publics’ opinion be damned. I would like to see some input on this blog regarding your honest opinions of this fiasco of a City Hall/Civic Center that is yet to be built.

I think the city council is completely STUPID. Forget the city hall building…To build a civic center in shopping center is Ridiculous…I’ve never seen it before in any other successful city. Why are these people trying to reinvent the wheel…

Thanks for your comments Carrie. If you have noticed the polling on my web site it is running heavily in favor of the Shopping Center site. You can bet this is Mayor Hand and Ed Grimes and their groupies behind this. When this issue was came before the council there was a poll on the Tehachapi News web site where the Capital Hills site was favored by 4 to 1. That is before ‘someone’ tampered with the poll. The 4 to 1 number was backed up by the comments received on my TN blog and from discussions I had with citizens about both of the projects. So I have no doubt where the majority of Tehachapi residents choose to have the new City Hall and Civic Center.

From my observation, the people on the City Council listen only to the recommendations of Staff and they do not analyze the issues placed before them and they appear to be shortsighted in their thinking.

I don’t know why they won’t wait until a General Plan is completed before making a decision that will have an impact over more than a decade.

The only thing we can do is support and vote for Henry Schaeffer and Jim Richards in November and vote out Hand and Grimes. Both of these gentlemen believe in doing what the public wants, which by the way is the law.
